Marionette lines, also referred to as puppet lines or oral commissure lines, are visible creases that extend from the corners of the mouth downwards towards the chin. These lines are called marionette lines due to their resemblance to the mouth movement of marionette puppets. Marionette lines typically form as a natural part of the aging process.
The development of marionette lines is influenced by several factors. Firstly, as we age, our skin gradually loses elasticity, collagen, and hyaluronic acid, which are essential components for maintaining a firm and smooth appearance. The decrease in these substances contributes to the loss of skin elasticity, causing sagging and the formation of lines and wrinkles.
Additionally, repetitive facial movements and expressions, such as smiling, talking, and chewing, can also contribute to the formation of marionette lines. Over time, the repeated contractions of the muscles around the mouth and chin can create creases and deep lines in these areas. Furthermore, the effects of gravity can exacerbate the appearance of marionette lines, as the downward pull of sagging skin adds to the prominence of these lines.
